From humble beginnings, Domaine NJC was born by Nicholas Coates & his partner Alexandra—born from a shared vision to craft authentic, organic wines in the heart of the Languedoc.

By no measure has this journey been easy. The best stories never are.

What began with a collection modest vineyards, just enough to call Nick a vigneron, quickly became a labour of resilience. The vines were neglected, the work immense, and many questioned why he didn’t simply pull them out. But where others saw hardship, he saw potential—terroir waiting to be revealed.

Originally trained with a PhD in Biochemistry and a career in medical research, Nick chose a different path—one driven by passion rather than convention. He returned to study winemaking, completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Oenology at the University of Adelaide before heading to France. It was the Languedoc—raw, diverse, and unconstrained—that captured his imagination. A place where tradition meets freedom, offering the perfect canvas for a New World winemaker to create distinctive, site-driven wines.

With determination, intuition, and a distinctly Australian spirit, Nick and Alexandra have built a boutique, family-run winery that reflects both perseverance and purpose—supported by a loyal community across Australia and France.

Through sustainable viticulture, minimal intervention winemaking, and a commitment to low environmental impact, each bottle captures the natural aromas, flavours, and energy of the land.

DOMAINE NJC spans 4.5 hectares of certified organic vineyards across the Malepère and Pyrénées-Orientales—two distinctive terroirs in southern France known for their diversity and character.

Our boutique winery is nestled into the hillside of an 18th-century terrace house in the heart of Alaigne, a historic village with over 1,000 years of heritage. This unique setting offers an intimate glimpse into authentic French wine culture, where tradition and modern winemaking come together.

It is here that Nick crafts each vintage with care and precision—and where guests are invited to experience the domaine firsthand.
